EPSO Abstract Reasoning: Pattern Recognition Techniques
Abstract reasoning tests your ability to identify patterns in sequences of shapes. It's not about knowledge; it's about systematic pattern detection. Here are the core pattern types you'll encounter.
The 6 Core Pattern Types
1. Rotation
Elements rotate by a fixed angle (45, 90, 135, or 180 degrees) between frames. Check both clockwise and counterclockwise. Sometimes multiple elements rotate independently at different rates.
2. Reflection
Elements flip across horizontal, vertical, or diagonal axes. Watch for mirror images that look similar to rotations but aren't.
3. Addition and Subtraction
Elements are added or removed systematically. Count the number of shapes, lines, or dots in each frame. Look for arithmetic progressions.
4. Color/Shading Cycles
Elements cycle through colors or shading patterns: white, gray, black, then back to white. Track each element's cycle independently.
5. Movement
Elements move along predefined paths: left to right, top to bottom, diagonal, or bouncing off edges. Map the trajectory across frames.
6. Superimposition
Two or more patterns are combined (overlaid) in each frame. Decompose the composite image into its component patterns, then track each separately.
The Systematic Approach
- Scan all frames first. Don't fixate on frame 1. Look at the full sequence to see the overall trend.
- Check the simplest rule first. Is something just rotating? If yes, apply it. Don't overcomplicate.
- Count and track. Count shapes, sides, dots, lines. Changes in count reveal addition/subtraction rules.
- Isolate elements. If there are multiple shapes, track each one separately across frames.
- Eliminate wrong answers. If you can't determine the exact rule, eliminate options that violate partial patterns you've identified.
Time Management
You get roughly 40-50 seconds per question in the actual exam. If you can't see the pattern within 30 seconds, flag it and move on. Come back to it if time allows. Getting stuck on one hard question and missing three easy ones is a bad trade.
Practice Makes Pattern Recognition Automatic
The good news: abstract reasoning is the most trainable section. With enough practice, pattern recognition becomes almost automatic. Aim for at least 20 abstract reasoning questions per day in the weeks before the exam.
