EPSO Computer Based Test (CBT) Tips: How to Perform on Test Day

EPSO Computer Based Test (CBT) Tips: How to Perform on Test Day

The EPSO computer based test (CBT) for competition EPSO/AD/427/26 is conducted entirely remotely using the TAO platform with live proctoring. Unlike previous cycles that included in-person assessment centres, this entire competition is remote — which changes how you need to prepare technically and strategically.

These practical CBT tips cover everything from setting up your environment to managing time across all five sections.

Know the Exact Test Format

Before test day, memorise the structure so there are no surprises:

  • Verbal reasoning: 35 minutes — this is your highest-weighted test (40% preliminary, 35% final). Minimum 10/20.
  • Numerical + abstract reasoning: 30 minutes combined — pass/fail only (minimum 10/20). Does not affect your ranking score but you must pass.
  • EU knowledge MCQ: 40 minutes — taken in L2. Minimum 15/30. Weight: 30% preliminary, 25% final.
  • Digital skills MCQ: 30 minutes — taken in L2. Minimum 20/40. Weight: 30% preliminary, 25% final.
  • EUFTE free-text essay: 40 minutes — taken in L2. Minimum 5/10. Weight: 15% final ranking only.

Set Up Your Remote Testing Environment

Since all tests are proctored remotely, your home setup matters:

  • Internet connection: use a wired ethernet connection if possible, not Wi-Fi. Test your connection speed beforehand.
  • Computer: use a laptop or desktop (not a tablet or mobile). Ensure your browser is up to date and compatible with TAO.
  • Room: choose a quiet room with a door you can close. Inform housemates or family not to interrupt during test windows.
  • Lighting: ensure your face is well-lit for the proctoring camera — no strong backlight.
  • ID ready: have your valid ID document on your desk before starting. You will need to show it to the proctor.
  • No second screens: proctors can see your screen and room. Remove any notes or additional devices from view.

Time Management per Section

Each section has a fixed time limit with no carry-over. Here is how to approach each:

Verbal Reasoning (35 min)

You typically get 5–6 passages with 3–4 questions each. Aim for about 5 minutes per passage. Read the passage once, then answer the questions. If a question is taking too long, mark it and move on — you can return at the end.

Numerical + Abstract (30 min)

These are pass/fail. Aim for steady accuracy rather than rushing. For numerical questions with complex calculations, use the on-screen calculator if available, or estimate to eliminate wrong answers quickly.

EU Knowledge MCQ (40 min)

With 30 questions in 40 minutes, you have about 80 seconds per question. Do not dwell on difficult questions. Mark uncertain answers and return — EU knowledge questions often trigger recall when you have moved through others.

Digital Skills MCQ (30 min)

40 questions in 30 minutes means roughly 45 seconds each. These are scenario-based — read the scenario carefully but answer quickly. If two answers seem similar, look for the one that reflects best practice in information security or data handling.

EUFTE Essay (40 min)

Spend the first 5 minutes planning: identify the question's core topic, jot two or three main points, draft a one-sentence conclusion. Then write for 30 minutes. Save 5 minutes to re-read and correct. Quality matters more than length — 200–280 well-structured words beats 400 rambling ones.

Strategies for Multiple Choice

  • Elimination first: for difficult questions, eliminate obviously wrong answers before choosing from the remaining options.
  • Do not change answers impulsively: studies consistently show your first instinct is more often correct on MCQ tests.
  • No negative marking (unless stated): always answer every question — never leave a blank.
  • Flag and return: most CBT platforms allow flagging. Use it rather than spending excessive time on one question.

Managing Test Anxiety

  • Do a full timed mock of each section at least twice before the real test.
  • On test day, arrive (log in) 15–20 minutes early for the proctoring check-in.
  • If you feel anxious during the test, take a slow breath before each passage or question set — do not rush when your mind is racing.
  • Remember: the minimum thresholds are achievable. Focus on passing minimums in numerical/abstract, then maximise your score in verbal, EU knowledge, and digital skills.

Practise on a Platform That Mirrors the Real Test

Passepso is designed specifically for EPSO/AD/427/26, with timed simulations that match the exact question counts and time limits. Practicing under realistic conditions is the single most effective way to improve your CBT performance.
