EPSO AD5 2026 Complete Guide: Tests, Format, Scoring, and How to Pass
The EPSO AD5 2026 competition — officially designated EPSO/AD/427/26 — is the EU's flagship generalist administrator recruitment for AD5 grade. With 1,490 reserve-list places and testing confirmed for autumn 2026, it is one of the most significant EU career opportunities in years.
This guide covers everything you need to know, sourced exclusively from the official competition notice published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
What Is the AD5 Competition?
The AD5 Administrator (Generalist) competition selects candidates for entry-level administrator positions across EU institutions — primarily the European Commission, European Parliament, Council of the EU, and other bodies. Successful candidates are placed on a reserve list from which institutions draw when they have vacancies.
Key facts:
- Reserve list places: 1,490
- Grade: AD5 (entry-level administrator)
- Profile: Generalist
- Testing: Fully remote — no Assessment Centre
- Application window: 5 February – 10 March 2026 (closed)
- Testing start: Autumn 2026 (officially confirmed)
The Six Test Areas
All tests are administered remotely via the TAO platform with live proctoring from your own computer.
1. Verbal Reasoning (L1)
35 minutes | Min. 10/20 | Weight: 40% preliminary, 35% final
Tests ability to draw logical conclusions from written passages using True/False/Cannot Say questions. No background knowledge required — only text comprehension. This is the highest-weighted section in both stages.
2. Numerical Reasoning (L1)
Combined with abstract, 30 min total | Pass/Fail only
Data interpretation from tables, graphs, and charts. A calculator is allowed. Does not contribute to ranking score, but failing eliminates you from the competition.
3. Abstract Reasoning (L1)
Combined with numerical, 30 min total | Pass/Fail only
Pattern recognition and logical sequences using shapes and symbols. No language or prior knowledge involved. Also pass/fail.
4. EU Knowledge (L2)
40 minutes | Min. 15/30 | Weight: 30% preliminary, 25% final
Multiple-choice questions covering EU history, institutions, treaties, decision-making procedures, the EU budget, EU policies, and recent EU affairs. Taken in your L2. Broadest scope of any section — requires months of structured preparation.
5. Digital Skills (L2)
30 minutes | Min. 20/40 | Weight: 30% preliminary, 25% final
Tests practical digital competencies in a professional EU context: GDPR, cybersecurity awareness, digital communication, information literacy, and use of common professional tools. Taken in your L2.
6. EUFTE Written Test (L2)
40 minutes | Min. 5/10 | Weight: 15% final only
A free-text essay on a topic related to EU affairs. Assessed on content knowledge, argumentation, and written expression in your L2. Not included in the preliminary ranking — only in the final score. You must still pass the minimum of 5/10.
How the Scoring Works
Preliminary ranking (determines who advances): 40% Verbal + 30% EU Knowledge + 30% Digital Skills. Only candidates who pass every minimum are ranked.
Final ranking (determines reserve list placement): 35% Verbal + 25% EU Knowledge + 25% Digital Skills + 15% EUFTE.
The EUFTE essay can meaningfully shift your final ranking even though it's not in the preliminary cut. A strong essay in your L2 is worth preparing for.
Language Rules
- L1 (C1 level): any official EU language — used for Verbal, Numerical, and Abstract reasoning
- L2 (B2 level): a different official EU language — used for EU Knowledge, Digital Skills, and the EUFTE essay
Practice in your actual L2, not just English. If you declared French as your L2, practice EU Knowledge questions in French.
What This Competition Does NOT Include
- No Assessment Centre (no oral presentation, group exercise, or interview)
- No Situational Judgement Test (SJT)
- No in-person tests of any kind
- No case study
If you're using preparation materials from older EPSO competitions, verify the format matches AD/427/26 exactly. The structure has changed significantly — there is no Assessment Centre in this competition.
Key Dates
- Application window: 5 February – 10 March 2026 (closed)
- Testing: Autumn 2026 (officially confirmed by EPSO on eu-careers.europa.eu)
- Supporting documents deadline: 7 October 2026, 12:00 Brussels time
The supporting documents deadline is fixed regardless of when testing happens. Start gathering any documents requiring official translation or notarisation now — it can take weeks.
Preparation Strategy: Where to Start
Given the scoring structure, the strategic priority order is:
- EU Knowledge — highest scope, slowest to build, significant weight in both stages
- Verbal Reasoning — highest weight overall, but faster to improve with practice
- Digital Skills — equal weight to EU Knowledge, but more learnable in concentrated sessions
- Numerical + Abstract Reasoning — pass/fail, but not optional
- EUFTE essay — start practising early; writing quality in L2 takes time to develop
The best starting point is a diagnostic test across all six areas to identify your actual baseline.
