EPSO AD7 Audit 2026 Preparation Guide: Why Only One Test Decides Your Ranking

EPSO/AD/428/26 is the open competition for administrators at grade AD 7 in the field of audit, published in the Official Journal on 14 April 2026. It seeks 448 successful candidates and drew 7,025 applications. Testing is expected at the end of September 2026, a date EPSO itself labels indicative.

What is the test format?

All five tests are taken in one day. Language 1 is one of the 24 official EU languages at C1 or above; language 2 is a different one of the remaining 23 at B2 or above.

Why does only one test decide your ranking?

This is the single most important thing to understand about AD7, and it is stated verbatim in Table 5 of the notice. The reasoning tests "will be scored to determine if the candidate obtained at least the required pass scores". The EUFTE likewise. Only for the field-related test does the notice say that the scores "will be used to create a ranking according to candidates' performance".

There is no combined score in this competition. Reasoning and the essay are gates: pass them and they are forgotten. Your position on a list of 448 places is decided entirely by 30 audit questions in 40 minutes. EUFTE scripts are marked, and eligibility checked, only for a group that in principle does not exceed 1.5 times the number of successful candidates sought.

Most candidates prepare in exactly the wrong proportion, spending months on reasoning because reasoning material is abundant, and days on the field test because it is not. Reasoning practice past a reliable pass is time that cannot improve your rank.

Is there a situational judgement test or an assessment centre?

No. The notice of competition for EPSO/AD/428/26 contains no situational judgement test, no assessment centre and no competition-stage interview.

What does the field-related test cover?

Here is the hard part, and the reason this competition rewards structured preparation: EPSO publishes no syllabus for the field-related test, and no sample of it. The official sample-test pages provide reasoning and written-test examples but state, for the field-related test, only that "further details are provided in the notice of competition and in the invitation letter".

What you do have is Annex II of the notice, the "typical duties" of the role, which functions as the closest thing to an official content map. The eleven categories of relevant experience listed in the eligibility conditions point the same way: audit itself, accounting and financial management, procurement and grants, internal control, anti-fraud and risk management, banking and financial analysis, statistics and data analytics, defined IT areas, taxation and customs, management of EU-funded projects, and consulting or legal practice in those areas.

Note also the eligibility arithmetic, because it is stricter than most candidates read it: a three-year degree requires seven years of relevant experience, a four-year degree six, a five-year degree five — and in every case at least four of those years must be professional experience in audit. Supporting documents are due by 30 September 2026.

What should the preparation plan be?

With testing indicatively at the end of September 2026, the order follows directly from the scoring:

1. Confirm you clear reasoning, then leave it. Verbal 10/20, numerical and abstract 10/20 combined. Practise to a stable pass under the real clock and stop; further gains do not enter your ranking.
2. Spend the bulk of your remaining time on the field test. Thirty questions decide 448 places. This is where the ranking is won.
3. Do not skip the EUFTE. It is pass/fail at 5/10, but failing it ends the competition regardless of how well you ranked, and there is no official sample in your language unless you write in English or French.
4. Rehearse the whole day once. Five tests in one sitting is an endurance problem as much as a knowledge one, and the first time you discover that should not be the real thing.
