The EPSO Reserve List: What It Is and How It Works

The reserve list is your ultimate target. But many candidates have misconceptions about what it means. Here is how it actually works.

What Is a Reserve List?

A pool of candidates who have successfully passed all stages of an EPSO competition. EU institutions recruit staff by selecting from these lists.

Being on the reserve list means you are eligible to be hired. It does not guarantee a job offer.

How Long Does It Last?

Reserve lists are typically valid for one year, but they are routinely extended. Some lists have remained active for several years. EPSO publishes extension decisions on its website.

What Happens After?

  1. Your profile becomes visible to HR departments across EU institutions
  2. You may be contacted for interviews by specific departments (DGs)
  3. You can also apply proactively to positions recruiting from your list
  4. The interview process is conducted by the hiring DG, not EPSO

Is It Guaranteed Employment?

No. Not all reserve list candidates receive job offers. However, historically, a large proportion are eventually recruited, especially AD5 generalist profiles which are in broad demand across institutions.

The Bottom Line

The reserve list is the gateway. Your goal should be singular: pass the competition and get on that list. Which DG, which institution, which city — that comes after. First, pass.
