You can see the pattern. You just can’t see it in sixty seconds.
In your own time, with the page still, you get these right. What beats you is the clock: five options that all look reasonable, a rule you can feel but cannot name, and forty of your sixty seconds already gone on figure three. It is the shortest test in the competition, it usually carries no ranking points at all — and it is the one most likely to end your candidature.
The Shape of the Answer is the method for that minute, written down. Compare the five options before you try to understand the panels. Resolve the cheapest difference first. Stop as soon as one answer is left standing.

The item isn’t hard. The minute is.
Almost nobody fails abstract reasoning because the rule was beyond them. They fail because they found it forty seconds too late, and the next three items paid for it.
Two options survive and you guess.
Narrowing five down to two feels like progress. It is where the marks are actually lost, and it has a cause you can name and drill.
The same two attributes, every time.
Nearly everyone misses the same couple of things without ever noticing which. Finding out which two is worth more to you than another fifty practice items.
What is in the 190 pages
Four parts, in the order you should meet them. One procedure, then a reference, then the drilling, then the clock.
The Method
Nine short chapters holding one four-step procedure — small on purpose, because anything you cannot hold in your head under a clock is not a method. Each chapter ends with a “Your Turn” item you solve before you read the answer.
The Field Guide
A reference, not a reading: one entry per stage, attribute, operator and distractor family, each with a picture and a tell. You consult it when a drill defeats you, not before.
The Drills
Worked examples that fade out, then interleaved sets mixed so you cannot solve by context, then a timed set — and an error log that tells you which two attributes are costing you marks.
The Exam
Three timed mocks in the exam’s own layout, ten items in ten minutes, each one dissected item by item afterwards. It closes on a single method card you can keep beside you.

Who it is for — and who it isn’t
The abstract reasoning item is common to the EPSO competitions: administrator (AD), assistant (AST), secretary (AST-SC) and contract agent (CAST). Only the parameters differ — how many questions, how long, what mark you need — and the first chapter shows you how to look yours up in your own Notice of Competition, which governs, not this book.
If you already finish timed abstract mocks with marks to spare, you do not need this. It is written for the candidate who is losing the section to the clock, or who has never been taught to read the five options before the panels.

EPSO publishes no taxonomy of item types, and this book does not pretend otherwise. The stages, attributes, operators and distractor families it teaches are our own vocabulary, built for teaching and grounded in the structure of a five-option item and in the sample reasoning tests EPSO itself publishes. Check them against the samples in your candidate account before exam day.
