EPSO Language Requirements for AD5 2026: Language 1 and Language 2

The EPSO AD5 2026 competition (EPSO/AD/427/26) requires candidates to demonstrate proficiency in at least two EU official languages. Understanding the language rules is essential for planning your preparation.

Language 1: Any Official EU Language

Language 1 must be an official language of the European Union. There are 24 official EU languages. Candidates choose their Language 1 when submitting their application. The verbal reasoning CBT test is typically taken in Language 1.

Language 2: English, French, or German

Language 2 must be English, French, or German — regardless of what Language 1 is. This restriction applies to all EPSO open competitions. Language 2 must be different from Language 1.

The Assessment Centre exercises (case study, oral presentation, group exercise) are conducted in Language 2.

Why Only Three Options for Language 2?

The restriction to English, French, and German for Language 2 reflects the working languages of the EU institutions. These three languages are the most widely used in daily institutional work. The European Court of Justice, for example, uses French as its deliberating language. The European Commission publishes many internal documents in English. German is the EU's most spoken mother tongue.

Practical Implications for AD5 Candidates

  • Non-English speakers: If your Language 1 is French or German, you still need English, French, or German as Language 2 (just not the same as your Language 1).
  • Italian candidates (45% of all applicants): Language 1 = Italian, Language 2 = English, French, or German.
  • Verbal Reasoning: Taken in Language 1. If your Language 1 is not among the most common, PassEPSO supports practice in all 24 EU official languages.

PassEPSO Language Support

PassEPSO allows you to select your Language 1 and Language 2 independently. Verbal reasoning practice is available in all 24 EU official languages. Other sections follow the Language 2 format.
