Frontex knowledge test: official topics and reference materials to study
Last checked: 7 June 2026 against official Frontex recruitment sources.
The Frontex knowledge test is not a general EU trivia quiz. The official Frontex recruitment update points candidates toward specific knowledge areas and a list of reference materials for the 2025/2026 Standing Corps recruitment. The list is described as non-exhaustive and indicative, which means candidates should use it as a structured preparation map rather than a promise that every question will come from one document.
Independent preparation note: PassEPSO is an independent study platform. Frontex, EPSO and EU institutions do not endorse, operate or review this site, and PassEPSO does not have access to confidential Frontex tests.
The official topic areas
Frontex says candidates should prepare for knowledge-test topics such as:
- EU legislation related to Frontex and border and/or coast guard functions and/or return-related activities.
- The functioning of EU institutions and bodies, including operational cooperation between the European Union and international organisations.
- Awareness of the EU’s geopolitical situation for leadership positions.
- Fundamental rights and their implementation in the law-enforcement sector.
- Leadership and resource management for leadership positions.
- Professionalism, integrity, responsibility and adherence to high ethical values.
- ICT knowledge needed to act as a member of the Standing Corps.
How to turn reference materials into marks
Most candidates read official sources too passively. A better method is to turn each document into a small set of exam-ready questions:
- What is the purpose of the instrument? If you cannot explain why the regulation or policy exists, you will struggle with application questions.
- Who has the power or obligation? Identify whether responsibility sits with Frontex, Member States, the Commission, national authorities, officers, monitors or another actor.
- What safeguards apply? Fundamental rights, data protection, accountability and proportionality are not side topics; they are central to border operations.
- What is operationally different in this situation? Maritime operations, return activities, screening, information exchange and vulnerability cases each change the practical answer.
- What would be wrong but tempting? Good multiple-choice preparation includes learning the common distractors: overbroad agency powers, missing rights safeguards, confusing EU bodies, or treating cooperation as command.
A practical study order
If you are short on time, do not jump randomly between documents. Use this order:
1. Frontex and the European Border and Coast Guard framework
Build the core map first: mandate, Standing Corps, operational support, coordination with Member States, EUROSUR and integrated border management.
2. Border and return law
Then study the legal logic of border control and return-related activities. Focus on definitions, procedural safeguards and who does what.
3. Fundamental rights
Fundamental rights are likely to appear not just as direct knowledge, but as constraints on operational decisions. Pay attention to vulnerability, non-discrimination, access to protection, dignity and accountability.
4. EU institutions and bodies
Frontex does not operate in isolation. You need a clean map of the Commission, agencies, Member States, Schengen-associated countries and international cooperation.
5. ICT and operational information systems
The official update includes ICT knowledge for Standing Corps members. Prepare the practical purpose of systems, data handling and information flows rather than memorising acronyms alone.
How to practise
Use short, timed sets. After each set, classify your misses: legal concept, actor confusion, rights safeguard, vocabulary, or speed. The goal is not just to read more; it is to make your answers more stable under pressure.
PassEPSO’s Frontex preparation path includes Frontex-specific field questions anchored to EU legal sources, plus reasoning practice for the psychometric side of the selection.
