Frontex written test: English, knowledge and psychometric tests explained

Candidates often search for the Frontex written test. The official Frontex vacancy notice does not package everything under one simple label. It describes an online Stage I with English language proficiency test(s) and a knowledge test, followed by Stage II tests including psychometric tests.

So when people say “written test”, they usually mean the part of the selection where you need to answer structured questions under time pressure before the interview stages begin.

1. Frontex English test

The official recruitment update tells candidates to practise English language skills because B2 level under the CEFR is required. In practical preparation terms, B2 is not just “I can speak English”. It means you should be able to read quickly, understand precise instructions, choose accurate wording and handle professional vocabulary under time pressure.

What to practise

• Reading comprehension with dense institutional or operational text.
• Grammar and sentence structure at professional B2 level.
• Vocabulary around borders, EU agencies, rights, security, return operations and cooperation.
• Fast elimination of plausible but inaccurate answer choices.

2. Frontex knowledge test

The knowledge test is the most content-heavy part of the online phase. Frontex lists indicative reference materials and says candidates should prepare for topics such as EU legislation related to Frontex and border/coast guard functions, EU institutions and bodies, fundamental rights, professional integrity, ethics and ICT knowledge needed for Standing Corps work.

The mistake is to read the reference list passively. You need to turn each source into testable knowledge: definitions, powers, safeguards, roles, limits and operational consequences.

High-yield knowledge areas

• Frontex legal basis: what the European Border and Coast Guard framework does and where Frontex fits.
• Border and return operations: the legal and operational logic behind border control, return-related activity and cooperation.
• EU institutions and bodies: who does what, especially where EU agencies interact with Member States and international organisations.
• Fundamental rights: safeguards, non-discrimination, vulnerability and accountability in law-enforcement contexts.
• ICT for border work: the practical systems and data environment Standing Corps officers may need to understand.

3. Frontex psychometric tests

The Team Member vacancy notice describes psychometric tests as timed multiple-choice assessments with one correct answer among alternative responses. It also states that these tests focus on verbal and abstract reasoning elements. That means preparation should combine accuracy with speed.

How to train without wasting time

• Verbal reasoning: practise extracting exactly what the text says, not what sounds likely.
• Abstract reasoning: practise patterns by rule families: movement, shape, number, rotation, symmetry and transformation.
• Timed blocks: do not prepare only in slow study mode. The real risk is losing points through pace and decision fatigue.
• Error review: track why you missed a question: vocabulary, rule detection, attention, time, or overthinking.
